How do you modify Electronic Fuel injection ?

Welcome to the new age of tuning computerised vehicles. Over the years the coming of the computer did marvels for the automotive industry. Unfortunately workshops lost all control over the tuning of these vehicles. Even the slightest idling problem cannot be cured by the non-franchised workshop. In most cases even the authorised agents cannot cure these problems. In short, the tuning of computerised vehicles became nearly impossible.

This of course became a challenge to some and we now have a multitude of Piggyback computers, Chips and stand alone EFi controllers. I decided on the UNICHIP for tuning running fuel injected vehicles and GOTECH for a stand alone Electronic Control Unit. Aftermarket Chips make no sense !

The UNICHIP gives the properly trained technician full control over the timing and mixture functions of most electronically controlled vehicles. Not only can mixtures and timing be set, but also it can be set under various load and RPM conditions. This gives one the ability to optimise the vehicle for economy under light load conditions and set it up for optimum performance under full-throttle conditions.

The UNICHIP is much more than just a "chip". In actual fact it is a fully functioning computer that is added to the vehicle’s existing engine control unit (ECU). Apart from controlling general timing and mixtures it can do idling control, drive extra injectors, take full control over timing functions, eliminate road speed governors etc. It can be accurately described as a "Piggyback" computer.

The UNICHIP gets wired into the existing ECU harness. If it is removed the vehicle is back to standard. Unlike other after-market units if the UNICHIP is programmed with zeros the vehicle will be standard. Only areas where the vehicle isn’t perfect need to be altered.

The main difference between other after-market "chips" and the UNICHIP is that with the UNICHIP every individual vehicle is optimised. It is not just a chip that was made on one particular vehicle and then gets used on other similar vehicles.

The GOTECH-MFI system is a low cost, easy to use micro-controlled engine management system. The Package includes: MFI (Micro Fuel Injection) box, connection harness, relay, injector plug kit, user manual and SOF-TECH configuration software. Of course I can install and tune it for you, or you can attempt it yourself. This is a real boon for somebody who has a “blown” ECU or purchased an engine without the ECU or if you want to convert your motor to EFi.

For instance if your ECU packed up, you need to find somebody to work out why and fix all the faulty components except for the ECU. Then only you can fit a GOTECH box.

Always first fix the cause before attempting a solution !

One thing is clear; we will NOT become a repair/diagnostics shop, but can assist with selling you the necessary parts to do the repair. I know this will be a shock to some, but my experience over 11 years in Namibia is that the general perception is, “vra is vry”, so diagnosing faults should be free to. I can’t survive like that, so No Diagnostics. Of course we will back up all products we have sold, as well as our labour.

Tuning the ECU therefore brings you 2 advantages:

1)         To optimize the vehicle for our conditions (similar what a carb/Distributor tune-up did for you in the past).

2)         If you do any meaningful modifications to your vehicle, you have to address your Engine management too. That means spark & fuel. Certain cars (Corsa) will not even run without a GOTECH fitted, once you fit a “hot” cam. Ignoring your ECU results in a poorly performing Engine to holed pistons at worst.

We still offer conversions in 2 ways:

1)         Full house, where everything gets done or

2)         Step by step, where we start with the K&N & Exhaust followed by a UNICHIP (EFI vehicles), followed by the Cylinder head and cam topped by a Carburettor (for non-EFi vehicles of course).

Of course where necessary a Dyno tune is part of the deal.

Of course this meant that I had to acquire a Dyno with Diagnostics equipment, such as a 4 Gas Analyzer. But that is paying for itself.
