Newsletter No 83
25 March 2019
G'day friends
We all know that
the economy is bad. Most also realise it is not going to pick up soon.
K&N ORDER
I have decided to
do my end-of-year K&N order mid-year already.
If you need anything specific, please let
me know ?
Without knowing what you will need within the next 6 months I cannot stock a
product.
Alternatively I can fly the products in, but surely you appreciate my current pricing :)

An Italian broadcaster did a review on K&N Airfilters
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ2ox9YaWA8&feature=youtu.be with
english subtitles.
Although it is mostly Motorcycle
based it still gives a good
idea of what these filters are capable of.
Even better that the quoted prices in Euro are in line with those
of Nick's Racing :)
K&N also produced the content on
How to change an Airfilter which can be found
here https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/ownership/how-to-change-an-air-filter/ar-AAyGwtu
TIME FOR DEVELOPMENT
The lack of work
has it's benefit, such as allowing me more time for Unichip
development.
Sometimes I do not
publish graph's on Dynotuned cars, simply because of
lack of time or because the vehicle had faults or had been "tuned"
previously.
This is a case with
the 2.8 Revo
where I somehow never got down to document a full development. I guess mostly
people had fitted exhaust and K&N before coming to me for tuning.
I am using somebody else's figures here who claimed stock was 127 bhp measured on the rear wheels.
He then used the stock Eco/Power switch to raise the power to 149 & 172 bhp respectively.
We have a Bolt-on-system for both the 2.4 & 2.8 Revo's
The Land Cruiser 4.5 D4d V8 is
probably just as interesting a story, as when Toyota released its 2.4 Hilux
petrol bakkie.
The 1VD-FTV engine appeared in bakkies overseas as
early as 2007 and the engine proved tough.
When the bakkie appeared in Namibia it immediately
became clear that this was not the powerhouse we had expected.
A lot of people banged on my doors simply to make the motor sound like a V8.
The exhaust
modifications not only made it sound like a V8, but released a ton of power to
boot.
Though with it came CEL showing Overboost error. This
was irritating but caused no issues and got fixed in a subsequent
dealer-software upgrade.
We also got stuck in with the Unichip and soon
realised that the stock clutch would not hold up to the doubling of the HP at
1500 RPM.
It seems a lot of "Tuners" do not understand how the VNT turbo works
and subsequently destroyed turbochargers. The exhaust is part of the boost
control in these turbo's. You see the same on the GD 6.
If you want this bakkie to make more power and are going to utilise this you
will be forced to upgrade the clutch !
Since mid 2016 these bakkies came out with an
upgraded clutch, but nothing strong enough for an engine tuned by us with the Unichip.
Then there is a button clutch that is not really fun to drive.
Finally I got in units that gave an improved feel over the stock clutch and
held up to punishment.
Cost for the clutch kit is N$ 25392 incl. VAT, excluding fitment.
I would suggest the following on a post 2016 bakkie:
- Fit a K&N replacement filter
N$ 923.65 incl.
- Fit a performance exhaust that
gives a nice deep growl without being loud for 8500 S/cab and 9500 for the
D/cab and Station wagon incl. VAT & fitment.
DIY is certainly an option, should you want to save on expenses. Anything more
than this and you must fit a beefier clutch.
Should you desire
more power or have the check light come on as a result of the exhaust, the Unichip will sort you out.
Simple installation will cost N$ 4000
The full-house 5-map Equalizer
Plug 'n Play installation will cost N$ 10500 and comprises of:
- Immobiliser map
- Standard map that will have no
performance or consumption difference. We can also change this to a valet map,
that makes less power than stock.
- Performance map for daily driving
- High performance map with throttle
booster - you use at your own peril. This can be increased significantly !
- Economy map, as we would install
with the N$ 4000 option.
We can customize these maps to suit your particular needs.
Power should increase from 151kW to 191 and torque from 430 to 580 Nm
Please note that we only offer this this PnP version
on special request, as I can offer a soldered in unit
for N$ 5500 all inclusive.
More details in my next Newsletter.
Furthermore the
5'th gear is so low that the engine screams at 120 kph
cruising speed.
There are upgrades for this.
Plaasbakkie that lasts forever
If I wanted a plaasbakkie I would choose the rugged
non-turbo 4.2 I6 Diesel version and add a K&N replacement filter as well as
a branch free-flow system for N$12 500.
This makes tons of torque, is relatively fuel efficient and lasts forever.
4-ways of switching the different maps of the Unichip:
- Using a switch already installed in your vehicle or have us install a
mechanical switch
- Rotary switch N$ 750
- Bluetooth unit from your Cellphone N$ 900
- RF (wireless switch) N$ 1400

The nice thing about this Keyfob is that you can also
switch 2 devices that have a trigger input (i.e. electric gate, electric garage
door, lights etc.) in addition to the 5 Unichip maps.
We now have a
plethora of Bolt-on systems.
Please contact
me for pricing, as this is expanding steadily.
Also Cat Foolers or mini cats became a problem, as my
supplier stopped. Others were lacking in quality.
We finally came right.
I hope you found
the above to be interesting
